In the salt-kissed coastal town of Ondina, where the Caribbean laps at the sea wall and the breeze carries frying oil and orange peel through every open window, perfumer Mercedes “Mercy” Colibrí has a nose for beautiful things — warm neroli, the cedar scent of a man she’s trying not to fall for, and her abuela’s buñuelos, golden and sacred and not to be messed with.
So when batches start vanishing from windowsills across town — between posadas, in the dead of night — Mercy takes it personally. Armed with a perfumer’s obsessive attention to detail, a family that won’t stop volunteering opinions, and a mischievous mutt named Manchito who is more snack thief than sleuth, she sets out to catch the thief before Christmas Eve, when the whole town gathers for the Festival Navideño. But the deeper she follows her nose, the more she realizes this isn’t a simple case of stolen sweets. Some crimes are committed for reasons that don’t fit neatly into right and wrong.
Buñuelos & Bah Humbugs is a heartwarming holiday whodunnit dusted in powdered sugar — for anyone who believes that what we owe each other matters more than what we’re owed.
